Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2021 The Illusionist is juicy, succulent and dark red and black fruited with ripe and succulent herbal notes that sway with elegance and power before offering subtle hints of oak and brown baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still tight with a fine mineral tension before showing layers of complexity over the long, spicy and juicy finish with lingering velvety tannins. It's already looking good.

Starting with a dark-fruited and mineral-driven nose, the 2020 The Illusionist turns to notes of tossed gravel with hints of graphite, plum skin and spiced cherries. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is balanced, fleshy and ripe with a red-fruited frame, fine mineral tension and a balanced structure, ending with a spicy finish. Nicely done!

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with 12% Petite Verdot and 7% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 The Illusionist opens to a dark ruby core with a juicy frame of fruit, fine oak and lifted floral essence of cherry blossom, graphite and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, the wine is firm, complex and layered with fine-grained tannins that sway on the palate as a delightful tertiary focus gains in amplitude before concluding with a tight tannic finish. Your patience will be rewarded.

A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2017 The Illusionist is dark ruby colored at the core with a solid ruby rim. Aromas of black cherry skin, redcurrant, cassis, sweet tobacco and dried herbs float out of the glass along with a soft dusty red floral expression. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a firm chassis fruit and tannin, while showing a balanced structure and continues to unfold with complexity. The finish is still tight but lingers long. Give this another year in bottle before opening.

The 2016 The Illusionist opens with a clean and expressive core of dark fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied on the palate, with blackberries, dark plum and cassis that cascade into a dusty, chewy note and rich dark-chocolate expression, giving way to ripe, firm tannins. The wine lingers with a soft mineral tone, oaky core and subtle spice note on the finessed finish. Only 1,000 cases were made.
