The 2019 Pinot Noir Goosepen Block has a pale ruby color and aromas of briary fruit, earth, spice and flint. The light-bodied palate is bright and chalky with restrained, spicy fruit and a refreshing finish.

Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir Goosepen Block gives an intense nose of cranberries, red currants and wild thyme with hints of fragrant earth and fallen leaves. The medium-bodied palate is densely laden with ripe red berry flavors and a pleasant herbal streak, supported by grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Goosepen Block was picked on September 13 and spent 17 months in French oak, 40% new. It has a slightly ferrous, wild strawberry, raspberry and bergamot-scented bouquet with superb delineation, as I have come to expect from Sokol Blosser. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy opening. Unlike the Orchard Block, this feels as if it needs more time in bottle to coalesce, although there are delightful black plum, cranberry leaf and dried herb notes filtering through. Give this 2-3 years in bottle and hopefully it will address its infant sultriness.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Goosepen Block comes from 14-year-old vines and was picked October 1, undergoing punch downs three times per day and aged in French oak for 17 months, one-third new. It has a very "2012" bouquet, quite opulent in style with kirsch, raspberry jam, potpourri and rose petal scents, becoming more and more floral in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp and poised with very well-judged acidity. I like the harmony here and the delicate dab of spice toward the finish. Tasted both in England and in Oregon, it actually tasted more ebullient in the former, but displayed more finesse in the latter. Either way, this is very fine.

The 2009 Goose Pen Block exhibits plenty of material but on the palate is somewhat narrow at the moment. It needs to be cellared to provide the opportunity for it to ultimately reveal its full potential. All of Sokol Blosser’s Pinot Noirs are certified organic. www.sokolblosser.com
