A lean, taut red, this evokes cherry, earth and woodsy underbrush elements. Shows the classic austerity of the vintage and seems to be unfurling at a glacial pace, yet this has ripe red fruit at its heart. Beefy tannins pump the breaks on the finish. This wine is made with the oldest vines at Sottimano's disposition and has a very exclusive availability at only 900 bottles produced. Two months of maceration, exposure to clay and three and a half years on the lees bring out notes of mint and balsamic herbal tones in this pretty expression. The 2010 Barbaresco Riserva is a very transparent wine with immense power, beauty and finesse. There are mineral shadings and beautiful details of licorice and a dusting of truffle: altogether an elegant expression of this terroir. This Riserva is set to appear again in 2013, 2015 and 2016. The first of those is still a year away from release as of this April 2019 tasting, so keep an eye out for it. By the way, I had reviewed this same wine last year, but I've decided to go ahead and print this double, more optimistic review regardless.

The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva is pure silk and elegance from start to finish. Violets, flowers and sweet Pinot-like fruit meld together in this sensual, mid-weight Barbaresco. The 2008 boasts striking inner perfume, great textural richness and fabulous depth, all backed by silky, polished tannins. It is as impressive in bottle as the separate components were when I tasted them from barrel as young wines. Sottimano’s Riserva is an old-vines bottling from Cotta and Pajore. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. I can’t say enough good things about the Sottimano family and the work they have done over the years to firmly establish themselves among Barbaresco’s top growers. This is one of the few places in Piedmont where every wine is consistently delicious. The only question is how delicious. In recent years, Andrea Sottimano has worked to give his Barbareschi extended time on the lees in a cold cellar, which also slows down the malos. This distinctly Burgundian approach stands in stark contrast to the way most French oak-aged wines are made in Piedmont, where malos typically follow right after the alcoholic fermentations. I tasted the 2010s just after they were bottled. Readers should take these notes as brief impressions on wines that will continue to come to life with further time in bottle. The 2005 Barbaresco Riserva is a dense, powerful, fruit-driven Barbaresco that is virtually impenetrable at this stage. This old-vines selection from Cotta and Pajore remains incredibly primary and youthful. Dark fruit, smoke, leather and tar are just some of the notes that linger on the massive yet impressively round, harmonious close. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. Sottimano’s 2007 Barbareschi have been impressive every time I have tasted them, starting from barrel a few years ago, to two tastings from bottle in recent months.
