With the words Selezione Limitata on the front label, this is a limited selection wine and a late release. The organic Dei Principi di Spadafora 2014 Nero d'Avola Schietto opens to a medium garnet color with some browning at the edges. The fruit ripeness comes forward in this wine, in addition to finely aged aromas. Those include earthy tones of leather, spice and potting soil. Nero d’Avola offers mild tannins; however, this wine has good structure and a lean texture. I am happily surprised by how well-maintained this wine ultimately proved to be. Some 6,000 bottles were released. Serve it with some wedges of aged pecorino.

The 2013 Nero d'Avola Schietto opens to a dark ruby color with plenty of succulent fruit and fiber. The bouquet exhibits ripe aromas of black cherry, dried blackberry, toasted pistachio nut and crushed anise seed. This is a mid-weight red wine from the deep south of Italy to pair with barbecued meats and spicy sausage. Some 13,000 bottles were produced.

This is a fascinating expression of the mighty red grape from Sicily that shares very little points in common with its peers. The 2012 Nero d'Avola Schietto is an out-of-the-box rendition with bright cola and balsam notes that resemble dried ginger, rosemary twig, Teriyaki and cassis. The wine is brooding and masculine in personality, but the vertical and direct nature of the bouquet is what gives it that extra kick. The finish is super smooth and silky. This is a worthwhile and beautiful expression.

The 2011 Nero d'Avola Schietto is another very elegant and streamlined wine from this boutique estate on the western coast of Sicily. Executed in stainless steel and botte grande, you really get a clear view of the fruit as a result. Nothing weighs down this wine. Dried blackberry and cherry aromas segue to tar, road pavement and balsam herb. It also shows characteristic aromas of black olive and Sicilian caper.
