The 2009 Sangiovese is a two vineyard blend that was aged in 20% new French and American oak. Cherries, cigar box, and leather elements inform the nose of a pure, medium-bodied, spicy, friendly wine meant for drinking now and over the next 3-4 years. The 2006 Sangiovese does a fine job of expressing the grape from which it was made. It is a forward, friendly wine meant for near-term drinking. Ron Coleman’s Tamarack Cellars produces a portfolio of easygoing, fairly priced wines that can best be described as middle of the road. They will not excite nor will they disappoint. This is all Sangiovese from Candy Mountain, and it’s a fine follow-up to the 2004. At this young stage the barrel toast is front and center, although it’s all second-fill barrels. The fruit shows a lot of spice, light plummy red flavor, and a bit of peppery herb. Simple, easy-drinking wine, without a lot of varietal presence.——P.G.(8/1/2007)—— 86
