Spending one less month in barrel than the 2003, the outstanding 2002 Zone 10 Cabernet Sauvignon is due to be released at some unspecified point in the future, but put your reservation in now! It displays a tight, backward nose that seems to have evolved at a glacial pace, with smoke-tinged black fruit laced with black pepper, the palate is medium-bodied, beautifully balanced with dense, brooding black fruit, a touch of cigar box and capsicum. Very classic in style, this is one of the few New Zealand wines imbued with long-term ageing potential.
Winemaker Jenny Dobson is a passionate Francophile having worked at Chateau Senejac and Domaine Dujac, before returning to New Zealand in 1996 and joining Te Awa, the Hawkes Bay winery founded in 1992 by the Lawson family that was sold to Julian Robertson ten years later. Their 50-hectare vineyard is located in the Gimblett Gravels upon free-draining alluvial soils. There is a tangible Gallic approach to their commendable, often soulful wines.
