Already showing signs of a little ageing on the rim, the 2007 Syrah has an agreeable, well-defined nose with mulberry, bacon fat and a touch of white fennel, which blossoms nicely in the glass after 20 minutes. The palate is medium-bodied, with slightly coarse tannin on the entry, sharp acidity, leading to a mature, irony finish with a peppery aftertaste. Drink this fully mature effort over the near term. With 2-hectares of red vines located on the steep slope of Waiheke’s peninsula, there is an Old World ethos at Te Whau where organic viticulture is being converted to biodynamic with minimal intervention in the winery. At times, the wines can lean dangerously towards lean and under-ripeness, but they furrow an individual style that often yields pleasing results. For those that like a little ‘old school’ claret in their Waiheke wine.
