The Tenuta di Fessina 2018 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci is delicate and spicy with dusty white pepper and dried Mediterranean herb. There is a slightly wild or unpredictable side to this wine, which is one of its most attractive assets. The tannins are on the dry side in this vintage, but Il Musmeci maintains a very elegant and graceful overall approach. Fruit comes from the estate's historic vineyard planted in 1932. Production is 6,600 bottles.

The 2010 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci opens to a light garnet color (lighter than I remember compared to past vintages) and a delicate bouquet showcasing dried rose petal, crushed stone, toasted chestnut husk and very delicate wild berry. This is a feminine and graceful expression that speaks in hushed, timid tones. The 2010 vintage does not deliver the power and boldness of previous vintages, but instead shows a Burgundian soul from one of Italy's most dramatic territories. The blend is a traditional composition of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio refined in large oak casks and tonneaux.

The estate-s flagship wine, the 2009 Etna Rosso Riserva Musmeci is always an elegant wine but this edition takes an extra long time to open in the glass. I-d suggest popping the cork six hours or more before serving. Fine nuances of dried cherry and cassis begin to appear with time and the wine finishes with ethereal tones of volcanic ash, cola and balsam herb. Grapes are sources from the Rovittello cru on the north face of Etna. Drink 2016-2026. Silvia Maestrelli is a leading lady of Etna wine. The 2008 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio from vineyards planted in 1920. Layers of dark fruit emerge from this powerful old-vine red, accentuated by hints of sweet tobacco and cedar. This is a decidedly intense style for the Etna. It will be interesting to see the direction Musmeci takes from here. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. I have been following Tenuta di Fessina for several years.
