A blend of Sangiovese (90%) with smaller percentages of Merlot and Colorino, the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva reveals a darkly saturated appearance and a heavier aromatic load of black fruit, ripe cherry, plum, spice and sweet potting soil. The wine finishes with medium-rich concentration, herbal tones and the natural freshness that comes from Sangiovese. This is a production of 16,000 bottles.

The Tenuta di Lilliano 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva is a silky and fruit-driven expression that highlights pressed cherry, blackberry and dark currants. There are savory aromas at the back that evoke tilled earth and light tobacco. This is a solid and basic Riserva from a vintage that saw extra heat and a lack of humidity throughout most of the summer.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is earthy and rich with a warm, velvety texture that spreads evenly over the palate. The wine shows dark fruit, dried blackberry and Morello cherry with an equal dose of leather, tar and spice. This is a dense and thickly textured medium to full-bodied Riserva with some dryness to the tannins and some mild astringency. It is a very tightly compacted and concentrated wine that would pair nicely with a maghmour, or Lebanese-style moussaka.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is a robust, medium- to full-bodied expression of Sangiovese. The bouquet unravels slowly with black fruit aromas that are interwoven with thick layers of spice, tobacco, smoke and cured meat. This is a solid and fleshy wine to pair with succulent cuts of red meat or grilled steak. The tannins are firm but neatly packed into the thick texture of this warm-vintage Tuscan red. Some 5,000 bottles were made.

I prefer the 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva to the Gran Selezione from the same vintage. This wine allows for a stronger varietal voice with more pronounced tones of wild berry, dried blackberry and balsam herb. There is a good amount of spice and oak toast as well, but it fades nicely into the background. The blend of fruit is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot, and the wine is aged in large oak casks for 15 months. Like the Gran Selezione, only 5,000 bottles are produced.
