Executed in a classic style with streamlined fruit weight and elegant berry aromas, the 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is true to the Sangiovese grape, of which this is a 100% expression. The wine offers sultry, dark plum and spice with forest floor and black olive. The wine ends with a medium-short close and nice freshness. This is a limited production of 5,000 bottles.

The Tenuta di Lilliano 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a lean and streamlined red wine to enjoy with some toasted Tuscan bread and chicken-liver terrine. With a full and elegant bouquet, it brings forward wild berry, wild rose, tilled earth and candied orange peel. The wine is tonic and clean with a pretty level of inner tension and grace that was not easy to achieve in this unusually dry and hot vintage.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a richly concentrated and thickly extracted wine that sits heavy on the palate with black fruit, spice, tar and tobacco. You can taste the winemaking efforts that went into making this wine with its special criteria that prizes richness and extraction. It wraps over the palate in thick, determined waves that would add power to a grilled steak and mashed potato dinner.

Tenuta di Lilliano's 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione offers a robust and thickly textured approach much like the Riserva (from the same vintage) that I tasted at the same time. Castellina in Chianti, to my mind, offers some of the most contemporary and international expressions of Chianti Classico. Those are descriptors that I would use without reservation in the case of this top-shelf wine. Dark cherry fruit and dried blackberry segues to clove, spice, smoke and cured tobacco. Sangiovese (90%) is blended with small parts Merlot and Colorino, then aged in both new and neutral tonneaux. Some 5,000 bottles were released.

The Tenuta di Lilliano 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione shows dark fruit, plum, leather and lots of spice. The wine is driven by oak notes, with cinnamon, clove and more exotic spice at the back. The leanness of the fruit in this vintage only gives greater prominence to those oak notes.
