The 2008 Tenuta di Valgiano emerges from the glass with layers of dark red fruit, smoke, minerals, herbs and leather, all of which come together in an articulated, medium-bodied style. The 2008 possesses notable intensity and depth, while retaining significant freshness. Darker hints of blueberries, blackberries and herbs inform the finish. This is just about as good as it gets in 2008, a year marked by a cold spring that reduced yields significantly followed by a warm and very dry summer that reduced yields again. The estate’s flagship Tenuta di Valgiano is rich, generous and inviting, but also a touch diffuse in 2007. Tar, smoke, soy, earthiness and incense are some of the nuances that emerge over time, adding complexity to the warm, dark fruit. This is an open, forward Tenuta that sweeps across the palate with generous fruit, but it comes across as unusually precocious and not built for the long term, while the aromatics aren’t as clean as they could be. The estate’s top bottling, the 2006 Rosso di Valgiano offers greater richness and density. Smoke, tar, menthol, licorice and leather all add complexity to the wine’s core of super-ripe dark fruit. This is an intense, brooding red that will benefit from at least another few years in bottle. Rosso di Valgiano is 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 20% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.
