The 2009 Tenuta di Valgiano is very, very young. Today, the wine comes across as extremely primary, with little in the way of aromatic complexity or nuance. The integration of fruit, tannin and acidity is gorgeous, which makes me hopeful for the future. This will be an interesting wine to revisit in another year or so. Dark raspberries, spices and licorice wrap around the fleshy, mid-weight finish. The 2009 Tenuta is 65% Sangiovese, 25% Syrah and 10% Merlot, aged in French oak, with just 5% new barrels. The 2008 Tenuta di Valgiano emerges from the glass with layers of dark red fruit, smoke, minerals, herbs and leather, all of which come together in an articulated, medium-bodied style. The 2008 possesses notable intensity and depth, while retaining significant freshness. Darker hints of blueberries, blackberries and herbs inform the finish. This is just about as good as it gets in 2008, a year marked by a cold spring that reduced yields significantly followed by a warm and very dry summer that reduced yields again. The estate’s top bottling, the 2006 Rosso di Valgiano offers greater richness and density. Smoke, tar, menthol, licorice and leather all add complexity to the wine’s core of super-ripe dark fruit. This is an intense, brooding red that will benefit from at least another few years in bottle. Rosso di Valgiano is 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 20% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. The 2001 Scasso dei Cesari is a limited edition wine, 100% old vine Sangiovese, very fragrant with elegant notes of red currants and violets, shapely and stylish on the palate, lithe rather than muscular but with a superior persistence and grace. A wine for Sangiovese lovers, to drink between 2005 and 2014. A very professionally run estate near the city of Lucca, Valgiano is normally classified as part of a cool-climate area of Tuscany, but the vineyards are quite well exposed. There is much fragrance and finesse in the wines, but good underlying strength as well, features which have persuaded Tan Dinh, a restaurant in the seventh arrondissment of Paris with one of the best cellars in France, to list these wines on the card.Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY; tel. Compelling (although hardly a bargain) is the 1999 Valgiano, a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, and 20% Syrah. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of blackberries, currants, charcoal, earth, and leather. Complex, with abundant finesse for its size, lovely fruit, and with considerable nuances that unfold as the wine sits in the glass, this medium to full-bodied, lush 1999 will drink well for 8-10 years.
