The 2007 Primitivo is made in a super-racy style, with plenty of ripe fruit, sweet spices and herbs. It offers excellent length and balance, particularly at this price point. Primitivo is the Apulian name for Zinfandel. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. The deteriorating US dollar prompted importer Leonardo LoCascio to create Terre, his proprietary label of budget-friendly wines focused on the indigenous varieties of Southern Italy. The wines are made by local partner wineries, and the lots are selected by LoCascio and consulting oenologist Alberto Antonini. This excellent Italian red offers a terrific value. The stainless steel-fermented and aged 2004 Primitivo is a savory, briery effort that represents an Italian version of California Zinfandel. It possesses peppery, earthy, strawberry and cherry notes along with a hint of herbs. Drink it over the next year.
