Like so many of his Pfalz colleagues, Minges has in recent years become very serious about Pinot Noir, and his late-released 2007 Spatburgunder trocken Z – from the site Ziegelerde (officially part of Rosengarten) – is more than full-enough of ripe red cherry and lingonberry so as not to have been disadvantaged by its sojourn in (German oak) barriques. Glossy and glycerin-rich; sappy and bright in a way too rare among Pfalz Pinot Noirs that more obviously attempt to make a big statement; this finishes with satisfying fresh fruit and saline savor if only modest complexity, and it should be worth following for at least a few years. For the most part, Theo Minges achieved admirable results in 2007, a vintage he saw as playing into his hand by promoting inherent clarity, nuance, and “energy, so that all you had to do in the cellar was direct it.”Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel.
