Le Strie is a local word for "witches," and you can see the ghoulish image of a "stria" on the front label. The 2008 Valtellina Superiore is, forgive me, bewitching thanks to the extraordinary purity and intensity delivered to all the senses. The bouquet shows elegantly evolved fruit with wild cherry, dark currant and layers of smoky tar or ash. The 2008 growing season was very difficult for vintners, with hailstorms that destroyed much of the crop. A severe selection process was employed to choose the best remaining clusters for this wine. Nebbiolo's best trait is its ability to age, and this 2008 vintage is not to be underestimated. It's drinking perfectly right now, so if you have a bottle, it's time to enjoy it. Or, wait, why not? The wine is poised for the long haul. This was a release of about 5,000 bottles.
