Of the estate's three Gran Selezione releases, this is my favorite. The Conti Capponi Villa Calcinaia 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna La Fornace does a great job of pulling in more complexity in addition to the ripe fruit flavors we saw in the other two samples. This wine makes room for white pepper and crushed limestone to frame the plumy fruit. It also makes good use of Sangiovese's natural freshness.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna La Fornace opens to bright cherry fruit with spice and crushed limestone. With fruit grown by the river Greve, the wine's mineral signature is carried with pride. Tar, licorice and smoke appear on the close. Enjoy it with a platter of pecorino wedges and salami. This wine ages in tonneaux for two years. Production is only 2,255 bottles strong.

Villa Calcinaia's 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna la Fornace has an almost exotic-smelling bouquet with dark fruit, dried mint and cumin seed. Balsam herb appears on the close, and the wine delivers mid-weight intensity with more of black fruit flavors on the close. This Gran Selezione is aged in oak for 24 months. Only 1,200 bottles were made.
