The 2006 Elcione is a fabulous value from Umbria. This French oak-aged blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon impresses for its overall balance and class. Ripe, succulent berries, flowers, tobacco, spices and underbrush are some of the nuances that emerge from this tasty red. There isn’t a ton of varietal character, but it is impossible to ignore the wine’s superb complexity, length and class, particularly at this level. The 2005 Elcione (50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet) opens with a floral bouquet that leads to red raspberries, cherries and spices. Although an attractive, mid-weight wine, the Elcione shows very little varietal character and lacks the sheer personality of the Terra di Confine. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.
