A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, the 2016 Monile is beautifully linear and tight, making great use of the elegant power inherent to these grapes. The bouquet is carefully etched and detailed with dark fruit, earth, light spice, lavender and grilled rosemary. I also like the subdued silkiness that is delivered to the palate. Production is 15,000 bottles.

The 2009 Monile explodes from the glass with a heady concoction of smoke, graphite, blackberries, licorice and tar. This is a decidedly muscular, powerful wine from Viticcio. Ideally, the 2009 should be cellared for another year or two, but it will always remain a big, big wine in need of similarly rich foods. The 2008 Monile (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot) is a wine that is very well-suited to the estate’s approach. The international grapes marry nicely with the French oak in this dark, structured red. Roasted coffee beans, leather, licorice and tar wrap around the intense blue and black fruit on the powerful finish. The 2008 is more tightly wound than the 2007, but that works nicely with these grapes and oak treatment. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. This is a solid set of red wines from Viticcio. As is sometime the case, the lower end wines are more successful, while some of the higher end wines fall victim to the temptation of trying to do too much. The 2007 Monile (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot) is a touch softer than the 2008. Layers of dark fruit, spices, leather and licorice open up onto the palate in this rich, textured wine. The 2007 possesses lovely density and a round, enveloping finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. This is a solid set of red wines from Viticcio. As is sometime the case, the lower end wines are more successful, while some of the higher end wines fall victim to the temptation of trying to do too much.
