The 2009 Pinot Noir Tall Poppy Final Blend (the name comes from an Ozzie/Kiwi expression for something that stands out from the crowd) surrenders an exceptional nose of exotic spices, floral notes, and darker fruits. Elegant on the palate but with more material than most wines of the vintage, this nicely concentrated, lengthy, pleasure-bent effort will keep on giving through 2019+. Yamhill Valley Vineyards has a relatively lengthy history for Willamette Valley, having started in 1983 in McMinnville, the oldest winery in that AVA. The wines are produced entirely from estate-grown fruit and bottled in Stelvin screw caps. The winery uses little new oak even for the top cuvees, a position which has paid off in the 2009 vintage with its relatively delicate fruit.Tel. (503) 843-3100; www.yamhill.com
