A big, rich effort that’s a blend of 84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 7% Malbec aged in primarily neutral French oak, Jean-Francois’ 2010 Merlot delivers a ripe, slightly high-toned array of plum, mint, pepper and hints of chocolate that flows to a deeply concentrated, rich, full-bodied red that has ample, if not too much, acidity keeping everything fresh. While a big wine, it carries itself well and will drink nicely for another 3-5 years. Drink now-2018.
Focusing on estate fruit from Pepper Bridge, Seven Hills and Les Collines Vineyards, Pepper Bridge Winery is located in the middle of the Walla Walla Valley AVA, with the wines made by Swiss Jean-Francois Pellet. While the Merlot is relatively up-front and approachable, the Cabernet Sauvignon and single vineyard efforts will all benefit from cellar time and are not for the tannin averse.
