The 2008 Shiraz comes from 40-90 year vines. Very deep garnet-purple in color, it gives an intensely minty, warm blackberry and menthol scented nose with supporting notes of black pepper, mace and dark chocolate. Full-bodied with firm grainy tannins and medium-high acid, this is a tight-knit wine with just enough flesh and a long spicy finish. Approachable now, it should be best consumed 2012 to 2019. Stephen Pannell not only has wine in his blood (his parents owned Moss Wood and now Piccardy in Western Australia) but he has spent considerable time working in the wineries of Bordeaux, Burgundy and South France not to mention some of Australia’s biggest names: Seppelt, Knappstein and Hardys. He’s now doing his own thing in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills and producing some inspired wines these days with an emphasis on producing stellar Grenache whilst also trying his hand at a personal passion, that elusive grape Nebbiolo.Importer: Epicurean Wines, Seattle, WA; tel. Blended of 76% Shiraz and 24% Grenache, the 2008 Shiraz-Grenache was produced from grapes that were harvested before the heat-wave that year. The fruit comes from 35-65 year old vines and was co-fermented. Deep garnet-purple colored, it has ripe blackberry and black cherry aromas with black pepper and Indian spices plus some hints of damp loam and tree bark. Rich, full-bodied fruit flavors are textured by firm grainy tannins with balancing acid and a long finish that lends a bit of chew. Drink it now to 2018+. No straight Shiraz was produced in 2007 or 2009.
