The 2007 Torre Albeniz Reserva contains 3% Albillo (a white grape) in its composition in order to increase viscosity and bind the color. Vineyard age for this cuvee ranges from 55 to 75 years. The wine was aged for 23 months, mainly in second fill barrels. Smoke, earthy minerals, Asian spices, espresso, a hint of truffle, and blackberry aromas are followed by an elegant style of Ribera de Duero with ample layered fruit, a firm acid structure, and enough ripe tannin to support 3-4 years of additional cellaring. Drink this classy effort from 2014 to 2027.
Finca Torremilanos is the only estate in Ribera del Duero permitted to produce Cava which they have now been doing for 30 years. The climate is cooler than Penedes where 95% of Spain’s Cava is made. It is made from 90% Viura (vine age 60-180 years) and 10% Chardonnay with 25 months on the lees and zero dosage with residual sugar less than 1%. Finca Torremilanos is to be commended for its effort to expand the winemaking envelope.
