Domaine de la Janasse is one of my favorite Chateauneuf du Pape producers. Proprietor Aime Sabon, has turned out a vin de pays that is an innovative blend of equal parts Syrah and Merlot. Not only is this dark opaque purple-colored wine amazingly extracted, it is pure and rich, with gobs of fruit, plenty of black-cherry and cassis aromas, peppery, cassis flavors, an unctuous texture, and a remarkable multi-layered mouthfeel. I will be reporting on Domaine de la Janasse's 1994 and 1995 Chateauneuf du Papes in the August issue, but wow, readers should get their hands on as much of this inexpensive gem as they can find.
