Marked by the dark green label to denote a special "selection" wine by Borgo del Tiglio, the 2015 Collio Malvasia Selezione reveals more spice, thick fruit and concentration than the other vintages of this wine included this set of reviews. It shows some pecorino cheese rind along with notes of white pepper. Even saltier than its siblings and more austere, the wine brings a big intensity and some exuberant menthol notes on the close. This wine shows interesting new sides to this versatile white grape.

Borgo del Tiglio makes what may be Italy's finest expression of the Malvasia grape. The 2013 Collio Malvasia Selezione is a wine that you must absolutely try if you are curious about this variety. The wine wraps around the palate with thick consistency and juicy layers of peach, honey and passion fruit. Drying mineral and a touch of light spice (thanks to ten months in oak) give the wine added appeal and complexity. Thanks to a point of bright acidity, the wine never feels heavy or too thick.

The 2010 Malvasia Selezione is fat, rich and textured. There isn’t a whole lot of varietal bouquet or fruit, at least not at this stage. Instead the Malvasia impresses for its textural richness and depth. Hints of passion fruit, lime and sweet white flowers flesh out on the textured finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. My wife and I sat down for a late summer dinner at L’Androna, the best restaurant in Grado, a gorgeous seaside town in Friuli. I had just returned the day before from two weeks in Burgundy, where I tasted just about every great 2009 white Burgundy, including virtually all of the benchmarks. Within that context, the next white I tasted should have been disappointing. Instead it was a revelation. The wine? Borgo del Tiglio’s 2009 old-vine Friulano Ronco della Chiesa. On this night, the Ronco della Chiesa was every bit the equal of the vast majority of the wines I tasted in Burgundy, and frankly far better than the average. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari is one of the leading lights in Friuli. His wines deserve far more recognition than they typically receive. The 2008 Malvasia Selezione is a powerful, inward wine. While texturally quite beautiful, there isn’t as much varietal definition or expressiveness as I had expected. Light floral, honeyed notes inform the finish. For any other producer, the 2008 Malvasia Selezione would be a standout but here it suffers a bit in comparison next to the superb 2009s. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari has few peers in Friuli, or Italy for that matter. This is a gorgeous set of truly exceptional world-class whites. As always, the only issue is finding the wines. It would be great to see Borgo del Tiglio gain more traction in the US. Simply put, I was blown away by what I tasted this year.
