The red wines begin with the 2005 Clochemerle, a blend of 56% Shiraz, 36% Grenache, and 8% Mourvedre. It was matured 50% in tank and 50% in older French oak. Dark ruby-colored, the nose is reticent but offers up scents of mineral, spice box, truffle, black cherry, and blueberry. Medium-bodied, the wine is elegantly styled with racy, moderately intense spicy fruit, decent depth, but a slightly narrow finish. The 2004 Clochemerle, an Australian version of Chateauneuf du Pape, is a blend of 48% Grenache, 38% Mourvedre, 12% Shiraz, and a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon. This extraordinarily elegant, fruity, full-bodied red offers notes of sweet cherries, licorice, and strawberry jam. Light on its feet with tremendous definition and purity as well as striking finesse and harmony, it tips the scales at only 14% alcohol, which is low for the vintage and for this area of Barossa.
