Offering a crisp, mid-weight style, the Cantina Andriano (Kellerei Andrian) 2020 Alto Adige Chardonnay Somereto reveals yellow fruit and a hint of something toasted like almonds or cumin seeds. The wine shows a nicely creamy style and a terrific presentation of easy flavors that are bright, primary and pure. This would be a nice white to have with a fried or blackened snapper filet. Some 50,000 bottles were produced.

The 2019 Alto Adige Chardonnay Somereto is a true charmer. The wine delivers some of the mild creaminess and textural smoothness that comes naturally to Chardonnay (outside any oak regime), and that pretty, mid-weight fruitiness is especially compelling in this vintage. Somereto is refreshingly crisp, mineral driven and fruity. Simple winemaking is completed in stainless steel with a brief six months of lees contact. Indeed, this is a beautifully naked expression of the grape, from calcareous, reddish clay soils and a cool climate at 260 to 380 meters above sea level. The finish is citrusy, acidic and fresh. You get tremendous value here with this 50,000-bottle production.

The 2018 Alto Adige Chardonnay Somereto is executed in a fresh and snappy style with bright citrus notes that pop from the bouquet with flashes of bright intensity. This is a crisp and delightful white wine that will add a sparkle to any easy seafood or vegetable-based recipe. The wine is fermented at low temperatures in steel vats and aged on the fine lees for a brief six months. Some 35,000 bottles were made.

Cantina Andriano (also identified as Kellerei Andrian in German) is another one of the many highly functional and quality-oriented co-op wineries to characterize the Alto Adige winescape. Their 2017 Alto Adige Chardonnay Somereto is a crisp and transparent expression with tight consistency and lean texture. This weightless and seamless Chardonnay is redolent of yellow peach and fresh citrus. Some 35,000 bottles were made.

The 2016 Alto Adige Chardonnay Somereto falls outside the classic expectations you might have for Italian Chardonnay. This is a light and tonic expression with a high level of inner energy. Its personality is not necessarily subdued, although the wine's performance is understated nonetheless. It does not offer obvious varietal characteristics. Instead, it shows light lemon zest with bitter almond, exotic fruit and tangy papaya. This pretty white would pair with fragrant tomato sauce with fresh basil leaf. This is a highly food-friendly value option. Drink this wine within the next 18 months.
