This is a classic expression of Lagrein with all the softness and exuberant fruit weight that you should expect of this grape. The Cantina Terlano 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries exhibits an inky dark appearance with purple and blackish hues. To the finish, this vintage offers dustings of earth and spice; however, the core of the wine is packed tight with fruity richness. Lagrein is normally not a very age-worthy grape, but this bottle will likely sail through to the 10-year mark. Some 45,000 bottles were made.

The Cantina Terlano 2017 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries stands apart from the estate's Lagrein Riserva Porphyr, thanks to a slightly more tart and acidic fruit profile. Like the other wine, the Gries primarily delivers dark fruit intensity with plum cake and black cherry; however, you also get some zesty spice and crisp forest fruit that makes your mouth pucker. There is a lot of pretty energy and intensity in this Northern Italian Lagrein. Production is 45,000 bottles.

Tilled soil and other slightly earthy tones mark the 2016 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries. It's a rustic approach, showing dark, ripe and vibrant black fruit and a lot of thickness. However, there is not much depth to this Langrein, it's actually quite shallow and immediate, keeping in line with the variety. The wine is aged in various sized oak vessels, both new and used. It's a good pick for a simple gnocchi and tomato sauce. Some 45,000 bottles were made.

As a rule, the Lagrein grape offers thick, blackish color saturation, dark fruit aromas and soft tannins. The 2015 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries offers all those things with the addition of barbecue spice, Spanish cedar and black licorice. This is a sophisticated expression with depth and a fine sense of dimension. Some 50,000 bottles were made.

Cantina Terlano shows great results with its red wines as well as its cool climate mountain whites. The 2013 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries is a soft and luscious rendition that delivers plump cherry flavors with blackberry and dark plum. Soft tannins give the wine a less formal approach.
