Always a great buy, the Cantina Terlano 2021 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Winkl is fragrant and floral with punchy aromas that pop from the glass. You definitely know that you are in front of a Sauvignon Blanc, but unlike some of the New Wold expressions that focus on green notes of kiwi and tomato leaf, this wine has a very crystalline or white personality with limestone, lychee and crisp pear. If you love this grape, you get your money's worth here. The wine is made mostly in stainless steel, with a tiny 20% that goes into barrel for eight months. Production is a very generous 240,000 bottles.

This is a delightful wine that I happily paired with skinless chicken marinated in cumin, olive oil and lemon juice. The 2020 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Winkl is fresh and tonic with lots of varietal purity and zesty energy. I suggest serving this bottle a few degrees colder than usual. Subtle tones of crushed mineral and sour grapefruit appear on the close. This was a production of about a quarter-million bottles.

The 2019 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Winkl opens to a luminous and reflective appearance. Varietal aromas of tangerine and citrus fruit are there, but the wine feels a bit heavy and one-dimensional overall, especially compared to the vivid and expressive vintages of the recent past. Salty mineral tones add a touch of elegance. This is one of Cantina Terlano's largest-production wines with 240,000 bottles released.

Cantina Terlano's 2018 Alto Adige Terlaner Sauvignon Winkl (with an ample 240,000 bottles made) is a beautifully articulate and forthcoming expression that shows the very best of Italian Sauvignon Blanc. It offers a case study as to what makes this grape taste different than, say, competing expressions from the New World or New Zealand. This fragrant grape tends to be less pungent and sharp in Italy, focusing instead on softer tones of summer peach, preserved lemon and passion fruit. The effect is silky, smooth and absolutely delicious.

The 2017 Alto Adige Terlaner Sauvignon Winkl is informal in approach and execution. The wine is made primarily in stainless steel, with only a small part (some 20%) that goes into oak barrel for five to seven months. It offers a bright bouquet with layers of exotic fruit, wild mountain herb, cumin and crushed rock. The mouthfeel is lean and crisp. With 250,000 bottles made, Winkl should be easy to locate.
