Cantina Florio's 2010 Malvasia Delle Lipari (500 mililiter) is, not surprisingly, characterized by distinctive notes of Marsala wine. The historic estate is one of the most important in terms of Marsala production and that strong fortified wine imprint has definitely transferred to this low-key dessert wine. The wine's appearance shows saturated golden rays and the bouquet reveals caramel, candied fruit, honey and butterscotch.

The 2008 Malvasia delle Lipari (500ml) is unlike any of its peers. Most Malvasia sweet wines made on the island of Salina present superbly fresh fruit with honey and candied almond. This expression shows interesting traits that tie it to the strong Marsala DNA of Cantine Florio. This Malvasia shows spice, caramel, candied orange peel, Vin Santo and other oxidative aromas. It opens to an off-gold, copper color. Think of it as a cross between Malvasia and Marsala.

A beautifully amber wine with generous notes of dried apricot, raisin and melted honey that slide down silky smooth. Thick, syrupy and sticky, this passito delivers that much needed sugar rush at the end of a satisfying meal.——M.L.(2/1/2006)—— 91
