The 1990 Barolo Collina Gabuti looks to be superb. Although still in cask, it displays fabulous depth and richness. If the sample I tasted was representative, it is a potentially magnificent Barolo with layers of flavor, sweet tannin, and gobs of extract, glycerin, alcohol, and flavor, not to mention personality. It should be drunk in 3-4 years and has the potential to last for two decades. Cappellano, who has a reputation for not wanting his wines to be compared with others, has been reluctant in the past to show his products in a comparative tasting.
The 1990 offerings appear to be smoother, richer, fuller-bodied than the 1989 Barolos.
