The 2008 TOURIGA NACIONAL is oaky and focused. It is very hard to find any Touriga under the oak overlay that this winery sometimes seems to like a bit too much. That said, this is nicely structured and quite tasty, and I suspect a lot of folks will like it a lot. With an hour’s aeration it does start to turn into something more interesting, if a little sterner, but the oak overlay remains considerable. Drink now-2017. The winery also has a “Dona Ermelinda” brand brought in by another importer. I’m told the other brands are somewhat different blends. The 2007 TOURIGA NACIONAL is well oaked, soft and vanilla-tinged on opening, but the oak does integrate. There are some plum and herbal notes lurking underneath which eventually assert themselves. Bright, with some grip and a little power also lurking underneath, this is a wine that comes around quickly and becomes gentle and harmonious. Its mid-palate concentration is modest. Drink now-2014.
