The 1990 Barolo is a standout wine with a great sense of force and vitality that is immediately recognized on the bouquet. The wine’s aromas veer strongly toward tobacco, leather, old spice, forest floor and wet terracotta. But those earthy tones never feel flat or excessively weighed down. Dig deep and you get a clear dose of oak spice with undertones of cinnamon, crushed clove and baking spice. Dried cassis and prune appear as subtle background tones along with more delicate nuances of dark cola and medicinal herb. The wine has aged gracefully over the years and shows a profound sense of density and structure. I returned to the glass 24 hours later and much of that residual freshness was still on hand. Drink: 2014-2020.
