Made with 100% Sangiovese (six Sangiovese clones plus eight massal selections of the same grape), the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli offers rich texture, lots of dark fruit and an overall oak-driven approach. It ages in 500-liter French barrel for 18 months (with 50% new oak) and then rests in cement for four months. It finishes softly with cinnamon, baking spice and a sweet note of white chocolate. Indeed, the modern winery at Castello di Fonterutoli boasts an enormous underground cellar with all the latest technology. Fruit comes from the vines in Fonterutoli, and 56,600 bottles are hitting the market now.

The beautiful 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli comes from a special growing site with alberese limestone soils broken up by lots of rocks. The wine is especially balanced and bright in this vintage with lots of cherry fruit definition, crushed stone, dusty mineral and blue flower. The tannins are sweet and rich, adding to an elegant medium-bodied mouthfeel. High-elevation vineyard positions guarantee freshness in this wine.

The Mazzei 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli shows a silky and fine consistency with bright aromas of wild cherry and cassis. This vintage is downplayed and subtle, surprisingly so, but also ethereal. That delicate bouquet is framed by light touches of smoke and spice, although the wine's intensity is carefully measured overall. These results should flesh out with more time in bottle.

The Mazzei 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is Sangiovese with a tiny component of Malvasia Nera. The wine is elegantly streamlined and subtle—in fact, more so than I would have expected from this largely opulent and exuberant vintage. The bouquet is both floral and fruity with wild berry, rose hip, lavender and cassis. These aromas are central to the Sangiovese playlist. This wine delivers on all the fundamental elements, although I feel that we got a little more depth and delineation in the previous, cooler-vintage release. The tannins are silky and elegant.
