The Mazzei 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from a cool vineyard site located at 350 meters in elevation. It is surrounded by thick forests on three sides. The role of the forest especially in the hills of Chianti is becoming ever more appreciated as we face hot summers and climate change. This wine remains focused and tight with wild berry, blackcurrant, grilled herb, spice and dark mineral tones. To the palate, there is plenty of sweet fruit followed by nicely integrated, dry tannins.

Made with mostly Sangiovese supplemented by the structural heft and texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (that makes up roughly 20% of the blend), this is a profound and important red wine from Tuscany. The Mazzei 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli is your proverbial steak buddy, or all-round meat wine, with abundant black fruit, spice, tannins and acidity to cut through the fat and the gristle. By a hair, I prefer the depth and intensity of the 2019 vintage compared to the 2018 vintage that I tasted at this same sitting. This wine is slightly more etched and angular, making it a good bet for extra bottle aging.

I tasted this wine from the 2018 vintage and the 2019 vintage at the same time. It was great fun to be able to compare and contrast. The Mazzei 2018 Concerto di Fonterutoli (an 80-20 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) is a true crowd-pleaser. There is beautiful roundness, depth and intensity here with the fundamental characteristics of both grapes showing with true grit. It opens to a darkly saturated appearance and terrific aromatic richness that incorporates elements of dark cherry, prune, spice, savory leather and smoked bacon. I'm opening up the drinking window since I last tasted this wine from barrel to accommodate those lovely, softly evolving tannins.

This is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon that has been produced since 1981. The fruit is sourced from both the Mazzei family's celebrated Siepi vineyard (located at 260 meters above sea level) and the Fonterutoli site at 500 meters in elevation. The 2017 Concerto di Fonterutoli is dark and saturated with thick layers of blackberry and dark currants, all followed by cured spice, tobacco and a touch of tar or burnt ember. This vintage shows thick darkness and concentrated fruit.
