Made with fruit from an experimental vineyard planted to 36 biotypes of Sangiovese, the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 stands apart, thanks to its very linear and focused style. This site is especially rocky with clay-limestone alberese soils. There is ripe fruit from a hot vintage and ample oak spice over a full-bodied finish. Ultimately, pretty mineral notes give lift and elegance to the bouquet. Some 13,900 bottles were made.

This represents the third vintage in which this wine carries a Gran Selezione designation. Fruit comes from an experimental vineyard at 350 meters in elevation with compact clay soils (with a few stones to break it up), good ventilation and a dominant south-facing position. The property measures 12.5 hectares and was acquired in 1997. Following the graceful 2018 vintage, the Mazzei 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 shows medium-rich concentration and sweet tannins with plenty of dark fruit, spice, underbrush and wild mint. The 2019 growing season was warm and without rain for most of the summer.

This wine made from a vineyard that is planted to 36 experimental biotypes of Sangiovese is always fascinating. The Mazzei 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 does not stray too far from the Sangiovese playlist, no matter which clone leads the blend, with bright cherry and fresh acidity. It shows terrific varietal purity thanks to blue flowers, wild herbs and soft earthy sensations. Despite its delicate bouquet, this wine offers good structure with fully integrated tannins.

The Mazzei family is introducing quite a few new and ambitious changes to its portfolio this year. This wine is one of them. Previously known as Mix 36, it represents a complicated blend of 36 biotypes of Sangiovese, all planted in an experimental vineyard not too far from the estate's high-technology winery. With this vintage, the wine has been upgraded from IGT status to Gran Selezione, at the top of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid. The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 offers great purity and focus. The bouquet is redolent of wild blueberry, spice, cola, grilled herb, blue flower and tilled earth. There is a pretty menthol-like note on the close.
