The 2002 Chianti Classico, which had to buck young vineyards and a wet vintage, more than holds its own with its pleasurable fruitiness, light herbs and spices, and good drinkability. Castello di San Sano, a substantial property, extends over a high plateau between Castello di Ama and San Felice in Gaiole in Chianti. There has long been considerable potential here, but the vineyards were in very poor shape when the estate was purchased 15 years ago. Replanting, investment, and the informed work of consulting oenologist Beppe Caviola have done the rest, and these first releases with the San Sano label are an impressive group.Importer: Five Star Imports, Plainview, NY; tel.
