The 2008 GRANDE RESERVA (VERTICE) is an equal blend of Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, with 15% Touriga Nacional added in, aged in barrel for 16 months. A bit oak tinged on opening, with perhaps a touch of nail polish on the nose lurking underneath, this is rather elegant in mid-palate depth and well constructed wine, with a nice backbone, good balance and the potential to integrate its parts perfectly. After a couple of hours of aeration, it was showing beautifully, with a graceful feel and a gripping finish. There were 11,000 bottles produced, plus some large format bottles. The 2007 GRANDE RESERVA (VERTICE) is a blend of Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, with 15% Touriga Nacional added in. It was aged in 50% new and 50% used oak for 16 months. The alcohol just exceeds 15% according to the data sheet I received, although the label indicates a little less. It generally handles it well, although it is noticeable on occasion. While it opens with intensity, an hour or so of aeration softens it rather quickly. It still shows grip on the finish, but the texture is smooth and the fruit is exceptionally flavorful. The mid-palate concentration is modest, and the wine thins a bit quickly with aeration. I’ve been less impressed by the dry wines from this estate than the sparklers, but this is pretty nice. The 2005 GRANDE RESERVA (VERTICE) is a blend of Tinta Barroca (10%), Tinta Roriz (45%), and the rest Touriga Franca. The winery says that 80% of the juice was from old vines. It was aged in French oak for 24 months. Not surprisingly, since they share a winemaker in common, there is some stylistic similarity here between the Quanta Terra -05 Grande Reserva reviewed here and this wine. Both have a certain suave and lush demeanor at the outset, but ultimately, this is earthier, showing a lot of game, and a bit more intensity and sharpness. With air, the barnyard becomes a bit more obvious. Those who like it will find that it lends this some distinction, but it won't be to everyone's taste. There were approximately 550 cases produced. The 2003 “Grande Reserva” (Vertice) is a blend of Touriga Nacional (35%), Tinta Roriz (35%) and Touriga Franca (30%) raised in French oak for 36 months, and unfiltered. Purple in color, the wine looks youthful and frothy. The oak softens the texture, but in the mid-palate the wine has pointed berry notes. The finish is sweet at first, but after aeration, it rounds into form, eventually finishing with austerity, as the tannins and alcohol take over. The tannins provide a considerable grip on the finish. At the price, it is a tasty wine that a lot of folks will like. Drink 2007-2012. This winery was founded in 1988 by Jack Davies of Schramsberg, the noted Napa sparkling wine producer.
