The 2007 ROSE ESPUMANTE BRUT (VERTICE) was disgorged in January, 2008 after 9 months in bottle. It is mostly Touriga Franca, with 18% Tinta Barroca and 6% Gouveio, the latter being the only white grape. Salmon colored, this has a slight earthy note on the nose. It is dry and crisp, elegant and flavorful. It will seem just a little bit different to those not following Portuguese wines—Tinta Barroca! Touriga Franca!—but it is your classic, light-on-its-feet sparkler, charming and hard to resist, a perfect choice for a lighter-styled, refreshing sparkler that you can keep cold and refreshing. Don’t misunderstand, by the way—this is light in the context of this winery’s lineup, but it has good depth for its category and nice acidity that makes it linger. It doesn’t just fade and vanish as it warms up a bit. Drink now-2012. This winery founded by the late Jack Davies of Schramsberg (although his family and company are no longer associated with Caves Transmontanas) is best known for its sparkling wines. As this impressive lineup shows, they take sparklers seriously here, and there have been some real nice values as well. In the face of exchange rate fluctuations, the prices remain reasonable, although they have crept up—from a suggested retail of $14 for the 2001 Super Reserva to $20 for the 2005, for instance. The 2005 Super Reserva is still only a 13 Euro wine in Portugal.Importer: V.O.S. Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 967-6948.
