As this is only the second vintage of this wine, my aging estimate for the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape les Clairettes de Gabriel (which was still in barrel at the time of my trip) is admittedly more conjecture than normal. It's a potentially stunning cuvée of Clairette, barrel fermented and aged eight months in new oak. Hints of smoke, toast and grilled citrus mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is crisp and focused, hinting at white peaches, then ending with mouthwatering acidity and tremendous length. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

A new cuvée for Vaudieu, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape les Clairettes de Gabriel is 100% Clairette, barrel fermented and aged in new oak. The result is honeyed and custardy-leesy, with tangerine and pineapple notes. It's full-bodied, round in the mouth and velvety in texture, with a touch of warmth and some popcorn notes on the finish. If you like white Rh?ne's, this is well worth trying when it's bottled and released.
