This blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon displays an inky/purple color and a big, expressive nose of black and blue fruits intermixed with incense, camphor and some subtle toasty oak and forest floor. Full-bodied but certainly not one of the highest in alcohol for a Right Bank St.-Emilion (13.5%), the wine has a lavish texture, impressive purity, and a long finish with no hard edges. This will be hard to resist over the next 10-15 years. The cellarmaster/regisseur at Clos Fourtet, Tony Balu, produces this sumptuous wine, and his consultant is Stephane Derenoncourt. Unfortunately, there is little of the wine, so I will keep my notes short.
