A tiny 2.47-acre vineyard owned by Tony Balu, the manager of Clos Fourtet, it will be almost impossible to find this 2010 given the fact that yields were 16 hectoliters per hectare (less than half of normal). The final blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon hit 13.5% alcohol, which is a lot lower than I would have suspected given the winemaker and the terroir. Sweet black currant and blackberry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, camphor and white flowers are found in this beautifully rich, opulent 2010. The finish is soft and velvety textured. It should drink well for 15+ years.

This blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon displays an inky/purple color and a big, expressive nose of black and blue fruits intermixed with incense, camphor and some subtle toasty oak and forest floor. Full-bodied but certainly not one of the highest in alcohol for a Right Bank St.-Emilion (13.5%), the wine has a lavish texture, impressive purity, and a long finish with no hard edges. This will be hard to resist over the next 10-15 years.The cellarmaster/regisseur at Clos Fourtet, Tony Balu, produces this sumptuous wine, and his consultant is Stephane Derenoncourt. Unfortunately, there is little of the wine, so I will keep my notes short.

From Tony Balu, the regisseur of the St.-Emilion estate of Clos Fourtet, this garagiste estate produces a mere 300 cases of wine from a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2007 is another opulent, full-bodied, luscious effort with lots of licorice, smoke, blackberry, and cassis fruit, a dense purple color, a layered palate, and a silky finish. Enjoy it over the next decade or more.
