Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Bakers Gully Vineyard Syrah offers notes of warmed mulberries and blueberries, prunes and hung meat with touches of tree bark, dried Mediterranean herbs and black olives. Nicely balanced in the mouth, this full bodied Syrah is well structured with crisp acid and a medium to firm level of rounded tannins going into the long and savory / dried fruit finish. The 2008 Bakers Gully Vineyard Syrah gives slightly baked fruit aromas of blackberry pie, spice box and vanilla, stewed cherries, licorice and coffee grounds. Full-bodied with a medium level of soft tannins, it’s well made but a little lacking in structure and finesse, finishing long and fruity. Drink it now to 2014+. Supple, generous and focused, this Syrah offers well-melded flavors of blueberry, dark plum and exotic spices, which pick up steam on the deftly balanced finish. The 2007 Syrah Bakers Gully was aged in 60% new French oak. Deep purple-colored, it displays aromas of smoked meat, game, incense, and blueberry. Flavorful and easy-going on the palate, this is a Syrah for enjoying over the next 8-10 years. In a sign of the times, pricing for Roman Bratasiuk’s Clarendon Hills portfolio has been reduced by close to 50% across the board. Suddenly, most of the wines offer an excellent price to quality relationship. As usual, the Clarendon Hills wines are unblended, 100% varietal, sourced from mostly old-vine, ungrafted, single vineyards, fermented naturally, and bottled without fining or filtration. Only seasoned oak is used for the Grenache bottlings, 100% new French oak for the Merlot and Cabernets, and 50-100% new French oak for the Syrahs depending upon the cuvee. There is a new addition to the portfolio, a Mourvedre sourced from 12 year old vines and aged in 2 year old French oak. The year 2007 was more difficult than the three that preceded it, marked by a 45-50% reduction in crop levels and elevated tannin from the resulting thick skins.
