The saturated ruby/purple-colored 1996 Barolo Vigneto Riva reveals an intense cherry, coffee, cedar, and smoky-scented nose. There is great richness, full body, terrific purity, surprisingly low acidity for a 1996, and a lush, multidimensional personality. While tannin is present in the finish, this is a large-scaled, gorgeously made Barolo that should be at its best between 2001-2015. A new estate from the village of Verduno, Alario Claudio produces small quantities of hedonistic, sumptuously-styled Barolos that are fermented in open-top fermenters and aged in 60%-80% new French oak casks.
