From the village of Verduno, Alario produces small quantities of this single vineyard Barolo. Not quite as good from bottle as it was from barrel, the dark ruby-colored, elegant 1997 exhibits restrained, subtle black cherry aromas and flavors mixed with road tar, tobacco, smoke, and earth. The saturated ruby/purple-colored 1996 Barolo Vigneto Riva reveals an intense cherry, coffee, cedar, and smoky-scented nose. There is great richness, full body, terrific purity, surprisingly low acidity for a 1996, and a lush, multidimensional personality. While tannin is present in the finish, this is a large-scaled, gorgeously made Barolo that should be at its best between 2001-2015.
