Aromas of orange rind, plums, peonies and sweet spices preface the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and sumptuous wine that's deep and sapid, underpinned by lively acids and powdery tannins.

Produced from purchased grapes, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots reveals aromas of plums and blackberries mingled with warm spices, smoke and peonies. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, with a layered core and succulent acids. This is a charming, inviting Santenots that will drink well young.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru les Santenots, aged in 25% new oak, has a brisk redcurrant and raspberry-scented bouquet, bunches of roses emerging with time and imparting more complexity as it aerates. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a crisp line of acidity, hints of damson towards the harmonious finish that feels very focused and refined. What a lovely Volnay from a winemaker synonymous with white.

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru les Santenots had a little bit of hail and as a result, underwent sorting. Alex Moreau said he took time to pick this particular cru and used partial whole bunch, 30% to 35%. It has a detailed bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis and subtle granitic scents that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin. The whole bunch is quite palpable with a stemminess coming through on the finish. I wonder whether slightly less stems would have benefit this Volnay? Still, it should age well as there is good substance and hopefully that will absorb those stems as time goes by.

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Santenots sees around 25% new oak. It has an undergrowth and forest-floor inspired bouquet: hints of brambly red fruits becoming more expressive as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin on the entry, a keen line of acidity, but needing to develop just a little more detail and delineation by the time of bottling. Not a bad Volnay, though not a great Santenots.
