The 2011 Reserve de Cassagne is a sleeper of the vintage. There are nearly 1,000 cases of this wine, which has not yet been bottled. Soft berry fruit and oodles of garrigue, pepper, roasted meat and loamy soil notes make for quite a perfumed style. This blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah aged in old barrels is medium-bodied, displays loads of depth, and is a surprisingly strong effort in 2011. A serious wine, the 2010 Reserve de Cassagne could pass for a top-flight Gigondas or perhaps even a Chateauneuf du Pape. Dense ruby/purple, with rich, broad, expensive flavors as well as loads of glycerin, body and intensity make for a delicious, black-fruited wine that should drink nicely for 4-5 years. Composed of 80% tank-aged Grenache and 20% barrel-aged Syrah, the 2010 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Massif d’Uchaux Reserve de Cassagne is a sleeper of the vintage. It boasts a deep ruby/purple hue along with abundant aromas of crisp blackberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with licorice, graphite and spice box. While there is lots of substance to the 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Massif d’Uchaux Reserve de Cassagne, it is a denser wine with a deeper ruby/purple color, but its tannins are noticeable, and the finish is monolithic and dry. Renjarde’s top cuvee, the 2006 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Massif d’Uchaux Reserve du Cassagne (40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 30% Cinsault) offers up scents of plums, cedar, kirsch, sassafras, and Provencal herbs. Medium-bodied, peppery, and spicy, this delicious 2006 can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years. A reliable estate in the relatively new Cotes du Rhone-Villages appellation of Massif d’Uchaux.
