The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hauts Lieux comes from a cooler, higher elevation parcel and is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre. Where the Trois Source cuvée is upfront and exuberant, this beauty offers more minerality as well as lots of ripe blackberry fruits, spice, roasted meats and hints of violets in a concentrated, backwards, tannic style. Forget bottles for 5-6 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

The 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape les Hauts Lieux incorporates more Mourvèdre (30%) and comes from the late ripening block on the upper plateau to the south of the estate. Inky colored, it gives up killer notes of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, crushed rock and meaty nuances. Medium to full-bodied, structured and tannic with solid concentration, it's one of the more serious wines in the vintage and will need short term cellaring. I suspect it will have 15-20 years of longevity.

More firm and backwards, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hauts Lieux is a longer-term prospect. Big minerality, dark fruits, iron, steel and licorice all emerge from the glass. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, edgy and concentrated, with building tannin. Give this beauty 4-5 years in the cellar and enjoy through 2032. It should be one of the longest lived efforts in the vintage.

Coming from a higher elevation, cooler terroir and limestone soils, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hauts Lieux is a total rock star in the vintage and checks in as a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and the balance Counoise and Cinsault, which was aged all in foudre. Harvested very late (and this estate normally harvests on the early side) and not wrapping up until October, it possesses gorgeous purity, with mineral-tinged aromas of blackberry, currants, licorice, ground herbs and violets all soaring from the glass. An all-around powerful, structured and rich 2011, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific acidity and big tannin, it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. Give it 2-3 years in the cellar, and drink bottles through 2026. Drink 2017-2026. Located in the northern part of the appellation, in mostly sandy soils and a cooler terroir, Domaine de La Vieille Julienne is run by the incredibly talented Jean-Paul Daumen. In addition to his Chateauneuf and Cotes du Rhone releases, he started a negociant label call Daumen, with releases from Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac and Cotes du Rhone. These are all high quality efforts and show the classic characteristics of the regions they come from. Looking at the Domaine de la Vieille Julienne releases, these 2011s and 2012s are some of the most exciting wines in the vintages and should not be missed! There are only 6,000 bottles of the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hauts Lieux, which comes from pure limestone soils. It boasts an impressive purple color in addition to lots of mineral-laced, crushed rock, blueberry, boysenberry and raspberry notes. The stunning purity, full-bodied mouthfeel and voluptuous, long finish make for a potentially legendary Chateauneuf du Pape. Those wines under the name DAUMEN are from Jean-Paul Daumen’s negociant operation. Some of them actually emerge from estate fruit that he has declassified from his vineyards. They are limited production, but exceptionally impressive cuvees, so consumers take note. Daumen is one of the most meticulous viticulturists and winemakers in Chateauneuf du Pape. From his cellars in the appellation’s northern sector known as Gres, he has long fashioned some extraordinary Chateauneuf du Papes as well as a small amount of high octane Cotes du Rhone from some of the oldest vines owned by his family. For starters, Daumen’s 2011s are some of the finest wines of the southern Rhone. Yields for both the estate and negociant cuvees averaged a mere 26 hectoliters per hectare, which is well under two tons of fruit per acre. Never one to rest on his already impressive laurels, Daumen has basically renamed his Chateauneuf du Papes to reflect the parcels from which they emanate.
