The outstanding 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Sablet Briguieres (70% Grenache and 30% Mourvedre) exhibits a deep blue/purple hue, an exuberant, ostentatious nose of red and black fruits, licorice, charcoal, and pepper, a spicy component, and beautiful fruit that cascades over the palate with a full-bodied mouthfeel. It should continue to drink well for another 3-4 years. Two fine efforts from this small estate in the Cotes du Rhone village of Sablet (they also make Vacqueyras and Gigondas). The serious 2003 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Sablet Briguieres is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre. This wine is a beauty with notes of licorice, sweet flowers, tree bark, truffle, and blueberry and black cherry. The fruit is sweet, the wine savory, pure, and best drunk over the next 3-4 years. This excellent Gigondas domaine turns out two vineyard designated wines from Sablet. Both 1990s exhibit deep ruby/purple colors, peppery, spicy, richly fruity noses, medium to full body, soft tannins, and voluptuous, fleshy, chewy textures. Drink them both over the next 2-3 years.
