From two parcels—one in Grand Maupertui and another in Les Chioures (next to Méo Camuzet's)—the 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru opens in the glass with notes of cherries, raspberries and spices, complemented by hints of licorice, rose petals and rich soil tones. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, with fine depth at the core, lively acids and fine-grained tannins, it's a rather suave, elegant rendition of Mongeard-Mugneret's Clos Vougeot.

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru opens in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, raspberries, dark chocolate, spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, powerful and elegantly muscular, its enveloping core of fruit is underpinned by rich structuring tannins. Built for the long haul, this remains nicely balanced despite its decidedly broad shoulders. This cuvée derives from a parcel in Grand Maupertui and another in Les Chioures (next to Méo Camuzet's).

The 2014 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from the domaine's 0.63-hectares of 45- to 50-year-old vines located in the lieu dit "Grand Maupertui" and "Quatier des Marei Haut" close to the chateau. It has a punchy, redcurrant, cranberry and raspberry-scented bouquet with a touch of leather originating from the new oak that will need three or four years to fully integrate. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin on the entry, good depth, quite muscular for a Clos Vougeot, but with impressive persistence on the finish. I still found myself wanting just a little more to come through, so afford this a few years in bottle.

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret has a fresh, sprightly, effervescent bouquet with orange peel, red cherries and even a cheeky note of peppermint. The palate is fresh and keen with a fine thread of acidity. The oak here is tangible but in sync with the fruit, lending the finish a sense of harmony and refinement. Give it another 3-4 years in bottle.
