The 1993 Syrah Grand Heritage is a blend from Sonoma's Durell Vineyard (58%) and the Fenaughty Vineyard (42%) in El Dorado. It reveals scents of toasty new oak, lavishly rich Syrah fruit (primarily cassis), full body, sweet, ripe tannin, and a long, layered, concentrated finish. This wine has traditionally been the flagship wine of the Edmunds St. John portfolio, and once again, it is a terrific example of Syrah that can be drunk now or cellared for 12+ years. I have been consistently impressed by the quality, complexity, and joy that the wines of Edmunds St. John provide. The 1992 Syrah Grand Heritage sounds to me like a play on the southern hemisphere's greatest dry red wine, the Grange Hermitage from Australia's Penfold's winery. The Grand Heritage offers a huge, smoky, bacon fat and cassis-scented nose, massively rich, super-concentrated flavors, commendable purity, and an unctuous texture. It can give the Grange Hermitage, as well as a great Hermitage from the Rhone Valley plenty of competition. This immensely impressive, super-rich wine is accessible enough to be drunk now, but concentrated and balanced enough to last for 15+ years.
