The powerful 1998 Viognier (14.7% alcohol) exhibits a soaring nose of honeysuckle and jammy peach scents. Nicely-textured, full-bodied, and fleshy, this low acid, plump wine should be drunk over the next year. Winemaker/proprietor Steve Edmunds co-fermented a tiny dollop of Viognier with Syrah from the El Dorado vineyard called Fenaughty, the first time this vineyard designation has appeared on an Edmunds St. John Syrah, but some fruit from this vineyard was used to create the 1992 and 1993 Grand Heritage Syrahs. This 4,000 case winery will expand production in 1999 to approximately 10,000 cases. If winemaker/proprietor Steve Edmunds had obtained more perfume in his 1993 Viognier, it would compete with Calera for first-place in California's Viognier sweepstakes. There are enticing, subdued, floral, honeysuckle and peach-like notes, but the real hedonistic blast is delivered on the palate. It is explosively rich and viscous, with gorgeous layers of fruit, glycerin, and alcohol. The younger generation would call it yummy! Drink it over the next year. Steve Edmunds, a super-talented red wine producer, continues to demonstrate a sure touch with white wine varietals.

Edmunds St. John's rich 1992 Viognier comes close to rivaling the superb Viogniers being made at Calera and Qupe. It offers an ostentatious, honey suckle, peach, and apricot-scented nose, gobs of unctuous, rich fruit, and a lush, fat finish. It is a big white wine oozing with fruit. Serve it with full-flavored poultry or fish dishes within 12 months of its release. As a postscript, kudos go to winemaker Steve Edmunds for taking a risk and preserving all of his grapes' flavor by bottling these wines with no filtration!
