The 2011 Barbera d’Asti Tasmorcan is drop-dead gorgeous. Readers are going to have a hard time finding a better wine for the money. Dark fruit, smoke, licorice and graphite flow through to the sexy, voluptuous finish. Sweet floral notes add a measure of refinement. This delicious, fruit-forward Barbera is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Even better, it is a great value. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. Elio Perrone has long been one of my favorites producers in Piedmont. I am not sure what happened with this set of new releases but, with one exception, the overall level of quality is notably lower than the norm across the board and with multiple bottles I tasted for this article. The 2010 Barbera d’Asti Tasmorcan is fabulous this year. I find wonderful delineation in the aromas and flavors, all supported by a vein of minerality that gives the wine its balance. The 2010 isn’t a flashy wine. Instead, it impresses with its superb balance and class. The Tasmorcan is best enjoyed at the dinner table, where its lively acidity and vinous personality will show at their best. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. The 2009 Barbera d’Asti Tasmorcan is a gorgeous red laced with berries, flowers and French oak. The juiciness of the fruit is highly appealing, while the finish is impeccably polished. This is a delicious entry-level Barbera from Perrone. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013. Proprietor Stefano Perrone makes reference-point Moscatos.
